Audrey Savransky of AS29 is Redefining Her Family’s Diamond Legacy
DateDecember 28, 2016
Audrey Savransky of AS29 may hail from the fourth generation of a diamond family in Antwerp, but her jewelry designs are far from traditional or old fashioned. Her pieces are modern classics – edgy, unique and inspiring – and are a favorite amongst some of the most stylish bishes out there including Rachel Zoe, Sienna Miller and Alexa Chung. Find out how Savransky is bringing her family legacy into the future in our interview with her below.
Tell us a bit about yourself and life before AS29.
My name is Audrey Savransky. I’m the founder of AS29. I was born in Belgium and I moved to Hong Kong in 2004. I used to manufacture for other brands before launching my own in 2008.
What’s the story behind the name “AS29?”
My family has been in the diamond industry for the last four generations. I launched AS29 in 2008, and have been carrying my family legacy since.
Did you always know that you’d eventually join the diamond industry?
Not really, as I studied journalism and communications. But being surrounded by diamonds all throughout my childhood and being a creative person has pushed me to work in the industry. In runs in my DNA.
Of all the amazing cities in the world, why Hong Kong?
Because when I met my husband, he was already living here. I love Hong Kong and it’s the best city in the world to work and raise your children.
In what ways has living in Hong Kong influenced you as a designer and as an entrepreneur?
As an entrepreneur, HK has made me realize that anything is possible here. It’s not quite the same in Europe these days in terms of efficiency, man power, work ethics, and mentality. People are really hard working here.
In terms of how the city has influenced me, it’s hard to say, as after 13 years of living here I truly think that HK lacks soul, heritage, history, or culture. I don’t feel inspired in HK in terms of creativity, but I definitely wouldn’t want to live elsewhere as this city as a lot of other amazing things to offer.
Run us through your creative process when designing jewelry.
Inspiration doesn’t come on demand. I’m always on the lookout – reading, browsing the internet, and going to jewelry exhibitions when I travel. It’s a constant process.
“Hire experienced people to help you at work. It’s crucial. Take senior employees, if you can, from the start. A single mistake can be fatal when working with diamonds.”
You once said that “the way you wear jewelry is usually a reflection of what kind of person you are.” How do you usually style your pieces for everyday wear and for a night out with the girls?
What I meant by that, is that everyone has their own style and dresses accordingly. I’m very often in black due to my skin tone, and love wearing phalanx rings and two or three finger rings. I think you should wear pieces that you can easily wear at work, and then add some matching ear cuffs or ear love earrings to dress it up at night.
I love sets, and I don’t like mixing different bracelets from different designers or collections. I hate looking like a Christmas tree, but I don’t mind wearing many pieces from the same collection. If you mix too much, you can’t see anything anymore.
What does an average day look like for you?
Having two young boys, the wake up call is early at my house. I’m usually up between 6 and 6:30am. I drop both kids off to the school bus, then I either do yoga, meditate, or swim. Otherwise, I go straight to work so that I can finish my day earlier and be with my children after school. I travel often, so I try to be with them as much as I can when I’m in HK.
What do you love most about your job?
Being independent and being able to manage my time as I see fit. And most importantly, doing something I truly LOVE!
Is there anything you’ve learned that you wish you knew when you first started your business?
Yes, hire experienced people to help you at work. It’s crucial. Take senior employees, if you can, from the start. A single mistake can be fatal when working with diamonds.
Looking ahead, are there any plans for AS29 that you’re particularly excited about?
Yes. It took a while to get it off the ground, but we are launching our online retail site very soon.
In three words, describe your journey with AS29!
An extraordinary one!
