The MISSBISH Photography Workshop | Bianca Scarlato
DateMarch 21, 2017
Photographer: Bianca Scarlato
Location: I’m based in Toronto. The energy of the city is important. If everyone around you is grinding, it’s hard not to follow suit.
Style: I think my style of photography is always changing. For me, it’s ultimately about finding and curating beauty in everyday life, whether it’s at a concert or in a coffee shop.
Equipment: I shoot with a Canon 5D mark iii. I shoot almost everything on a 50mm 1.4 lens.
How did you get into photography? Tell us about your first experience.
When I was younger, I used to stack shoeboxes to use as a tripod and shot selfies on timer with my mom’s digital camera in my bedroom.
Tell us the story behind one of the most memorable photos you’ve shot…
One of my most memorable experiences was shooting the Bad Boy Reunion Tour at the Air Canada Centre. I was backstage with a few photographers waiting on the artists to make their entrances and exits, so we could get our shots. We stood hidden in the halls, discussing our camera settings, and had about 15 seconds to get a photo as the artists made their way to or from the stage. I got a shot of Diddy waving back at us, wearing a do-rag. It’s one of my favorites.
“Do you. Shoot what you want to shoot, however you want to shoot it.”
Photography is all about capturing that moment. What’s the secret?
Shoot the series of images in front of you, not the single picture.
What is a constant source of inspiration for you as a photographer?
The internet. It’s an endless source.
Who has been a great influence or mentor to you and what did you learn from them that you still carry with you today?
I realize that my work is often influenced by who I’m with. The majority of what I’ve learned is from close friends that I work with on a regular basis. Collaboration is always a good idea.
Tell us three photography tips.
1. Don’t think about it too much. My favorite photos are never planned.
2. Learn to use your gear to its full potential by shooting manually. You’re smarter than your camera.
3. Do you. Shoot what you want to shoot, however you want to shoot it.
