NYFW had yet to officially begin on Wednesday evening as NYC's hippest congregated outside of the Barclays Center in rainy Brooklyn - the site of this season's VFILES Runway show. As with every season, VFILES selected a small group of up-and-coming designers to showcase their work amidst a crowd of industry insiders, this time inside the arena's freight loading dock. Runway 9 winners included JunJie Yang, Christian Stone, Louis Pileggi, and a featured collection from INXX. Migos opened the show by cruising out of a freight elevator in a yellow 'rarri, which remained on the circular runway throughout the presentation, and the front row was packed with tastemakers like Joey Bada$$, VFILES mentor Dapper Dan, Lion Babe, Trinidad James, Slick Rick, Tinashe (who also hosted the after party) and streetstyle favorite Aleali May. And while the fashion was the real star of the show, the crowd was also treated to a mid-show performance from Jessie J, who debuted her world exclusive single "Think About That" while rocking a very dope INXX oversized silk bomber. (Queen Cardi B's name was also listed on the docket, but she appeared to be a no-show.)
As we would have expected from the fashion-forward retailer, all brand collections featured gender-fluidity at their core, in addition to an infused element of DIY. And unsurprisingly, were each a bit left-of-center. Louis Pileggi outfitted models in asymmetrical skirts and dresses underneath dangling dick necklaces while Christian Stone served up bell-bottom "backpack pants" in multiple colors and shiny fabrics on models with caked-on metallic dirt facials. Our main fashion takeaway, though? We really need to step up our outerwear game. From JunJie's colorful, monstrously-oversized leather moto coats and furs with flames to INXX's boxy denim jackets and embroidered hoodies with cutouts, options were aplenty and all impeccably styled to turn heads on life's true runway - the city streets.
