Kim Kardashian’s ‘Vogue’ India Cover Sparks Controversy
For March's issue of Vogue India, the magazine chose Kim Kardashian West as the cover star. But there has been some backlash regarding this cover. Photographed by Greg Swales and styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, although Kim looks stunning in the photos, some may think that the magazine should have chosen an Indian model.
The controversy began with a tweet, "I have nothing against Kim Kardashian but @VOGUEIndia is really doing itself a disservice by continually neglecting to portrait [sic] brown women in their 'magazine' — you're perpetuating a detrimental cycle of underrepresentation. Stop whitewashing your own damn culture."
If you can remember, this also occurred when Vogue India decided to put Kendall Jenner on the cover last year for their 10th-anniversary issue. At that time Vogue India responded, "Statistically, 90 percent of our covers are Indian! And we are proud of that. We are Vogue, an international brand, and we want to give the love back by featuring some of the best international celebrities on our covers. Occasionally!"
