First off, you have a deep love and appreciation for all things health and fitness. Can you tell us about where this comes from?
My love of fitness stemmed from a fascination with nutrition. I love food facts, and when I discovered I was intolerant to a lot of different food groups, I felt inspired to learn and research more about food and how it affects the body in different ways. I was never into sports as a kid but in my late teens, I found that I loved going to the gym and I liked seeing personal progress and how it directly correlates to the effort you put in and your technique. I put the two together and was lucky enough to make a career of it.
You describe Sweat with Bec as a holistic approach that works on the “whole package,” can you elaborate on what this means?
It means working on both the inside and out. Fitness and nutrition are a lot more than how things look aesthetically. I take into account how your body’s feeling, your energy levels, happiness levels, how you’re sleeping, and making sure that everything is improving - not just weight loss as you go on your fitness journey.
Why is it important to you that Sweat with Bec is a one-on-one experience?
Everyone is completely different, therefore nothing beats a personal touch and program. Having your sole needs catered for not only means faster and more effective results, but it also means that along the journey, on a personal level, you learn a lot about your body and what works for you.
Why is it important to set realistic and attainable goals?
In all honestly, life is stressful enough without putting the stress on ourselves to achieve the unattainable. For all my clients, I like to map out their journey step by step. I’m a firm believer in making a couple of changes a week as opposed to a complete lifestyle overhaul. In my experience, this leads to happier clients that aren't completely compromising a social life or lifestyle. In turn, they're seeing better results.
In my own personal experience, focusing on short term goals makes the overall journey a lot more positive. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a complete goal digger, but on the other hand, I know I’ll never be a Victoria’s Secret model. There’s no need for the unnecessary pressure.
“I want to empower women to feel and look their best, to be confident and happy within their own skin."
You’re originally from Melbourne, Australia but now you live in NYC. What prompted the move?
I was in search of a challenge and experience. I was getting too comfortable in Melbourne. After a vacation to the States, I fell in love and shortly after, I applied for the green card lottery and was lucky enough to win it.
What were some of the biggest challenges that came with adapting to a new city?
Trying to find all my new favorite hot spots. I’ve always taken pride in knowing all of the best places to eat, to grab a coffee or a cocktail in Melbourne. I found it to be an exciting challenge to find them in New York, but sometimes frustrating - like, why’d it take me six months to find the perfect coffee? Haha.
You have a range of Sweat with Bec “booty bands” - are these your secret weapon?
Yes, these bad boys are a saving grace when it comes to on the go workouts. Whether it's in a hotel room or at home, the beach, the park or the gym, these guys up the ante on all your favorite movements, creating a completely portable but tough workout.
Finish this sentence: “My guilty pleasure is….”
I love mixing Kombucha and Tequlia - but not all the time.
Are there any fitness or health trends you’re loving so far in 2017? And are there any you wish stayed in 2016?
I love that collagen peptides are popping up everywhere and are becoming readily available, and I’m happy to see the final curtain close on detox teas in 2016.
What is one thing you really hope women take away from Sweat with Bec?
Sweat With Bec is about being a bad*ss with a good *ss. I want to empower women to feel and look their best, to be confident and happy within their own skin. It’s an all-encompassing lifestyle change with sass, it’s about looking your best and becoming the best version of you without feeling deprived.
What are three hidden gems in NYC?
Aire Ancient Baths to treat yourself.
Miss Paradis for super healthy Mediterranean eats.
Infinity Float Tanks at Q Flatiron for a complete reset and wind down.
What does MISSBISH mean to you?
MISSBISH to me means being empowered, being a bad*ss, and being informed but sassy as f*ck.
Who’s your MISSBISH? Tell us who she is and why she’s an inspiration to you.
My mom. I was raised with an attitude of thinking “f*ck what everyone else thinks, as long as you are happy and healthy and not harming anyone, then just do you.” It was this attitude my mom embodied that made me realize that by being a woman, you are unstoppable.
