Black Panther star Lupita Nyong'o recently chatted with Allure about learning to embrace her natural hair.
Growing up in Kenya, the US, and Mexico, the actress says she felt insecure about her curls, and eventually relaxed her hair. But the upkeep was too much, and one day she decided to just cut it all off-- which was both scary and liberating. Part of the challenge to embracing her natural hair was that no one knew how to care for it, she explained. "Even in Kenya — you’d think we are predominantly African and black out there-- but when I finally had my hair natural, the hairstylist that I had been going to for so long with my relaxed hair didn’t know what to do with my natural hair and just kept offering me different chemicals to put in it. In the end I was like, 'Why don’t you know?' And he was like, 'We don’t learn how to do natural hair in school.' Now, of course, things have really changed."
Now, Lupita looks absolutely stunning on the cover of Allure with a variety of hairstyles that highlight her natural locks. Check it out above!
