Scarlett Johansson To Play a Transgender Man in New Movie ‘Rub & Tug’
Scarlett Johansson has been cast to play a transgender man in the new movie Rub & Tug, directed by Rupert Sanders, about a crime boss who headed up underground sex work in 1970's Pittsburgh. People aren't so thrilled about it considering that Johansson is very much a cisgender female. You might also remember the controversy Johansson elicited when she was cast in the Japanese anime franchise Ghost in a Shell, also directed by Sanders. We're picking up on a theme here.
We dig ScarJo, but seriously? Yes, filmmakers and casting crew should be afforded certain liberties to choose the right actors for these roles. That said, this behavior continues to marginalize ethnic, trans, and LGBTQ+ talent and further fuels people's beliefs that these acting pools don't exist or simply aren't good enough for major box-office roles. Oftentimes, trans people can't even get in the same room as A-list celebrities to audition for parts, trans or otherwise.
Ultimately, Ghost in a Shell was a major flop, so we'll see how this one pans out in comparison.
