The Boss BISH Behind Aussie Meets Cali Activewear, Tully Lou

Author: Kristen McCloud

In a world where fashion-meets-street has become commonplace, Tully Lou's self-named activewear brand stands out among the rest. Born out of her own struggle with body acceptance and mental health, Tully wanted to create a fashion line that was both inspiring and fashion forward. TULLY LOU combines the similar styles of Australian and Californian active living for pieces that are both chic and functional. Check out our interview with Tully below to learn more about TULLY LOU and putting health first.

What sparked your decision to create an activewear line? How does it differ from others?
When I was a teenager I was diagnosed with anorexia and depression. I had to quit school in year 10 and recover at home with my family.

Whilst recovering I discovered yoga -- which I fell in love with! I remember one day in a yoga class back in 2011 looking around the classroom; all of the women were wearing black baggy tees and pants. I recall thinking, "Wow that's not inspiring and doesn't make you feel motivated or empowered." So that's when I had this idea to create an activewear brand that inspired women and empowered us to want to work out while being a little edgy and fashion forward.

I feel like the TL brand is different from others because it has a story. I really hope that my story inspires other women, and lets them know that they can do anything.

Your collections have been featured at major events like MBFW, what's it like to reach these milestones with your brand?
It's very rewarding and also very overwhelming. As a teen, I always wanted to be a designer and have a collection on the runway. When starting TULLY LOU, I didn't ever think that activewear would even be on the runway. To see that TL was just blows my mind.

Tell us about the inspiration behind your latest collection, UNITED?
I was inspired by old school '90s sportswear. As you can see in the fashion world, the last few months have seen some MAJOR throwbacks. Fila and Champion to name a few, it's crazy that some of the stuff I see girls wearing I used to wear in my early teens. Now I'm so angry that I threw all of that stuff out.

How do California and Australia differ in the way people pursue fitness?
I think they are very similar. Australians are really active, we are always at the beach or outdoors hiking. California is the same way, which I love. In both places, it's an everyday social thing to do something active outdoors with friends and family.

“Stop comparing yourself to others... you can only control one life, and that is yours!"

How do you motivate yourself on the days when you don't want to workout, but know that you should?
I love music for motivation. I also try to remember the feeling from endorphins that I get post workout. I live for that feeling, it's so motivating and I always know I will feel a hundred times better afterward.

What’s your go-to healthy meal?
Crispy salmon in coconut oil with a big bowl of salad topped with goat cheese, seeds, goji berries, and avo mash -- that's my jam. Oh, and anything with almond butter!

Aside from food and working out, what are some other ways you keep yourself healthy?
Meditation and spending time with my family and friends. Those two things are so powerful for my happiness and all around health.

Tell us your golden rule for living a healthy lifestyle.
Stop comparing yourself to others. Comparison puts focus on the wrong person. You can only control one life, and that is yours!

Any future goals or projects coming up that you can tell us about?
More brand awareness internationally (more work trips yay!). Expanding the TULLY LOU brand not only within fashion but within health and wellness. Aligning TL with like-minded businesses and continuing to empower women to live healthier and happier lives. Also, maybe a runway show in NYC!

What are three hidden gems in Australia?
1. Perth, WA Coastline for amazing crystal clear beaches.

2. Wave Rock, near Hyden; I am dying to do a shoot here!

3. Kyneton because it's my home town and I have so many amazing memories there.

What does MISSBISH mean to you?
MISSBISH to me is a bold woman who is comfortable and authentic. She's a kick-arse woman who empowers and supports others; a hustler and most importantly, someone who is passionate and driven.

Who’s your MISSBISH? Tell us who she is and why she’s an inspiration to you.
Chrissy Teigen. She is real, authentic, hilarious, and not afraid to say what she thinks. At TULLY LOU, we always refer to our customer as Chrissy. In some situations our question will always be, "What would Chrissy do!?"
