The MISSBISH Photography Workshop | Sonjay Williams
01.16 / MISSBISH Photography Workshop
Photographer: Sonjay Williams
Location: I don’t really have a base. I’m always traveling up and down the country, but London is where my home is.
Equipment: Canon 700D with a 24-105mm and my Sony Z5 premium. For editing, VSCO Cam, Lightroom and Photoshop.
Style: I don’t have a style, although some may think differently. Fashion is what I enjoy shooting the most, but architecture will always be on the same path.
How did you get into photography? Tell us about your first experience.
When I first held my camera. There was a shift in the Universe.
Photography is all about capturing that moment. What’s the secret?
By evaluating what you have in front of you.
Tell us the story behind one of the most memorable photos you’ve shot…
I don’t have one memorable photo. I don’t believe I’ve reached that stage yet. It's too early; too soon.
What is a constant source of inspiration for you as a photographer?
Steve Jobs , Nathaniel Brown, Othello Grey, Paul Jung, Brick Grillins, Majid Jordan, Henry Hwu, Hanna Tveite and Ace Amir. I cannot give you a reason as to why, but if you've experienced their work, you may understand where my thought process comes from.
Who has been a great influence or mentor to you and what did you learn from them that you still carry with you today?
Polo North, Sam Roach and my girlfriend. These three have never left me since the day we crossed paths. I’ve learned that being yourself and being real to the art will get you far, even if that means losing companions along the way. I’ve learned that love is way more valuable than happiness, and that if you really love something or someone, you will try your hardest to accomplish the task ahead of you, no matter the consequences.
“Watch more films. Films like Interstellar and The Matrix have so much value to our world. Once you understand the heart of these films, you can spread that knowledge to the things you love."
Tell us three photography tips.
1. Don’t follow the crowd. I feel that London is lost - everyone wants to do council estate photography with a model in full adidas, or a Nike tracksuit. It's overplayed and overdone.
2. Watch more films. Films like Interstellar and The Matrix have so much value to our world. Once you understand the heart of these films, you can spread that knowledge to the things you love.
3. I don’t have a third rule or tip. I think the third idea would be to follow the Universe.
Finish the sentence...
If I weren’t afraid I would... jump into a black hole.
I wouldn't be where I am today if... I sat and cried about all that I’ve been through.
I've been listening to... a lot of Kid Cudi, Majid Jordan, Kanye West, Brick Grillins, Donald Glover, Drake, Banks and Travis $cott.
Kids these days... need to follow their own paths, and not that of others.
I look and feel my best when... I dream.
When no one is looking I... zone out.
Traveling... to the moon.
I respect... everyone who has a good heart
