Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Michelle Lee, editor-in-chief at allure Magazine, features three top Asian models in the fashion and beauty industry, Soojoo Park, Fernanda Ly, and Fei Fei Sun, as cover models for the inaugural hair issue.
"It’s been 18 long years since the first — and almost only — Asian woman appeared on the cover of this magazine. (Olivia Munn, whose mom is of Chinese descent, graced the cover 14 years later.) In 327 issues, over 28 years, there had only been two Asian women on the cover. We’ve made a real effort to celebrate diversity on all platforms of Allure in the past two years. But, my God, only two covers?" shares Michelle, as she goes on about how there is a lack of Asian representation in the magazine.
Fernanda Ly is a trailblazer as she creates her own image that is instantly recognizable by everyone. Her cotton candy pink hair has people turning heads and makes her unique as she flaunts her personal style. Soojoo Park is iconic with her platinum blonde hair while challenging the conventional ideas of Asian beauty. And, as the first Chinese woman to be featured on the cover of American, Italian, and Japanese Vogue, Fei Fei Sun is paving the way for inclusion and diversity.
"There's something we can all learn about each other through the lens of beauty," Michelle shares. This is only the beginning of the major change to come.
